Surveillance footage from Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida captured an incident on May 30, where patient Wenyou Rubin attacked emergency room nurse Yanira Eguileor. Rubin struck Eguileor multiple times, resulting in injuries to her head, neck, spine, and back, as reported by NBC6. The attack occurred in a newly constructed $300 million area of the hospital. Rubin also assaulted patient finance staffer Tisa Wolf before targeting Eguileor.
Eguileor stated that she intervened to protect Wolf when Rubin approached her aggressively. "I heard a loud scream from one of the staff members, a female," Eguileor recalled. "I turned around, and this man is running after her, toward the nurse’s station. That’s when I turned around, and I went towards them, and he was about to strike her, and I said, ‘No! Don’t hit her.’"
Following the incident, Eguileor filed a $5 million negligence lawsuit against the hospital. She reported to WSVN that Rubin punched her three times with a closed fist. Her attorney, Michael Pizzi, expressed concern over the hospital's response during the attack, stating, "You have a career trauma nurse, knocked semi-unconscious, could’ve been killed, just lying on the floor with no protections while this guy continues to ransack the trauma ward."
Rubin has been charged with battery on an emergency medical care provider and is currently in jail awaiting transfer to a psychiatric unit. He has a pending battery case from 2024 involving a law enforcement officer. A hospital spokesperson confirmed that two public safety officers responded to the incident and that Eguileor received immediate care. The spokesperson emphasized the hospital's commitment to employee safety and the training provided to staff for handling aggressive behavior. Additionally, Pizzi has filed a whistleblower complaint against the hospital, alleging retaliation against Eguileor for acquiring patient health information for personal gain. Police have not commented on the lawsuit.
