Police Raid Uncovers Hidden Compartments in Shops During Operation Against High Street Crime

Police officers, alerted by a sniffer dog, discovered hidden compartments in shops during a recent operation in Lowestoft, Suffolk. The operation, part of a UK-wide crackdown on high street crime led by the National Crime Agency (NCA), targeted convenience stores, nail salons, barbers, and massage parlours. Officers found illegal tobacco stashed in secret compartments, including a stash worth £1,000 hidden in a vape shop's ceiling. Other hidden chambers were identified behind an electric radiator and under the shop floor. Security Minister Dan Jarvis observed the raids, which involved Suffolk Police, Immigration Enforcement, and Trading Standards. He noted that shops involved in criminal activity often hide in plain sight, harming legitimate businesses. The Home Office has announced the recruitment of 500 new officers to combat money laundering networks, part of a £500 million investment over three years. Many shops selling illegal goods remain operational despite having items seized, as councils can currently only close them for six months, a period that will be extended to a year. Police report that individual shops can generate up to £3,000 weekly from illegal tobacco sales, impacting tax revenue and funding criminal enterprises. John French, a modern slavery specialist at Suffolk Constabulary, highlighted the exploitation of shop workers linked to organized immigration crime. Local MP Jess Asato emphasized the need for law enforcement against those who violate regulations.
