Kevin Stefanski Addresses Quarterback Situation Ahead of Game Against Panthers

<p>Atlanta Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski provided updates on the team's quarterback situation ahead of a Week 2 home game against the Carolina Panthers. During a press briefing on Wednesday, Stefanski stated that he is "not ruling anybody out" regarding the quarterback lineup.</p><p>Cooper Rush, who stepped in for an injured Tua Tagovailoa during the Falcons’ season-opening loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, participated fully in practice after dealing with a back issue earlier in the week. In the 20-13 loss to the Steelers, Rush recorded 143 passing yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown by T.J. Watt.</p><p>Tua Tagovailoa sustained an oblique injury in practice days before the game against the Steelers and was ruled out for the opener. He remains listed as day-to-day and had not participated in practice as of Wednesday.</p><p>Stefanski noted that Rush is continuing treatment for a back spasm that occurred over the weekend. He did not confirm whether Tagovailoa would start if he is healthy.</p><p>Stefanski remarked, "Of course, ideal world, I think everybody, every team, you'd love to know who's playing at every position. That's a no-brainer. I get that part. But we're going to be flexible and make sure that we're giving all of our guys the ability to go play and play well."</p><p>Michael Penix Jr. is anticipated to take on the starting quarterback role at some point this season. Penix, a projected first-round pick in 2024, started nine of the Falcons’ first ten games last season before missing a game due to injury. He has since been medically cleared to return but indicated he wants to be at full strength before playing in 2026.</p><p>Penix stated, "I had that conversation and I just told [coach Stefanski], 'I'm not where I want to be right now.' I want to be able to be 100 percent so I can help this team win football games. And I'm really close."</p><p>Jack Strand, an undrafted free agent from Minnesota State Moorhead, was listed as Rush’s backup in Week 1. He gained attention during the preseason, finishing with 306 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. However, his opportunities to build on that momentum have been limited as practice reps decrease once the regular season starts. Nevertheless, Stefanski mentioned that Strand is also a possibility for the game against Carolina.</p><p>Stefanski confirmed, "Jack is not being ruled out for this game." The Panthers lost their season opener 59-37 to the Chicago Bears.</p>
