Israel and Morocco have agreed to upgrade their diplomatic ties by elevating their respective missions to embassies and appointing ambassadors. This agreement was reached during a meeting between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, hosted by the United States ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, in New York on September 16, 2026.
In addition to establishing embassies, the two countries will expand air travel by reinstating direct flights operated by carriers from both nations. They also plan to advance economic and trade relations, with a goal to complete two agreements by the end of the year regarding investment protection and preventing double taxation.
The US mission to the UN issued a joint statement emphasizing that the establishment of full diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel is in the common interest of both countries and will contribute to peace. The announcement coincides with the sixth anniversary of the Abraham Accords, which aimed to normalize relations between Israel and several Arab and Muslim-majority countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, Sudan, and Kazakhstan.
