Labour's Lisa Nandy Supports Ed Sheeran Amid Support Acts Withdrawal

Labour's Lisa Nandy expressed support for Ed Sheeran after his remaining support acts withdrew from his tour. Nandy, the Culture Secretary, stated that Sheeran was in a 'really difficult and impossible position' and expressed 'enormous sympathy' for him. The controversy arose after US artist Macklemore was removed from Sheeran's Loop Tour following his pro-Palestinian remarks during concerts in New Jersey, which led to backlash from some Jewish groups and a petition for his removal. Macklemore confirmed on Instagram that he was dropped from the tour, but Sheeran clarified that the decision was made by the promoter. Following this, several artists, including Aaron Rowe and Finneas, announced their withdrawal from the tour. Nandy noted that while artists have a history of commenting on politics, many concert-goers prefer to enjoy music without political discourse. Sheeran stated on Instagram that he was not complicit in the situation and expressed his personal views on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Elan Carr, chief executive of the Israeli-American Council, criticized Macklemore's actions, stating they were inappropriate for a concert setting. Sheeran's next performance is scheduled for September 19 in Philadelphia, with 17 tour dates remaining until December 11 in Mexico City.
