<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Danish pharmaceutical company <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/pharmaceutical-industry/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Novo Nordisk</a> is partnering with American <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/artificial-intelligence/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">artificial intelligence</a> company <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/anthropic/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Anthropic</a> to utilize Anthropic’s Claude model in its drug discovery research and development.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Novo, the developer of the weight loss drug Ozempic, announced the partnership on September 16, 2026, stating that it will support the company’s goal of becoming “the world’s most AI-driven healthcare company.” The Danish company indicated that it would leverage Anthropic’s advanced models to enhance its software development, coinciding with ongoing discussions regarding frontier AI in the United States, where Anthropic is a key participant.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“This partnership is another testament to our ambition to become the world’s most AI-driven healthcare company, building on Novo’s current AI initiatives with other technology partners,” Mike Doustdar, president and CEO of Novo, <a href="https://www.novonordisk.com/content/nncorp/global/en/news-and-media/news-and-ir-materials/news-details.html?id=916768" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">stated in a press release</a>. “Joining forces with Anthropic will supercharge our R&D organization and help us on our mission to bring new, transformative health solutions to people living with chronic diseases.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Doustdar noted that Claude Science could enhance research and development efficiency, facilitate breakthroughs, and improve understanding of pharmaceuticals and human biology. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei remarked that his company’s AI model has the “potential to compress a century’s worth of biological and medical breakthroughs into a decade.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“By giving leading researchers access to safe, capable, and trusted frontier models, we can shorten research timelines, improve outcomes, and discover medicines and treatments that significantly improve human life,” Amodei added.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Amodei’s announcement of the pharmaceutical partnership comes amid increased scrutiny of AI in Washington, D.C., following a former Anthropic researcher’s resignation and warning that AI models could pose existential risks by the end of the decade.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In response to these concerns, Amodei advocated for a national slowdown of frontier AI development to ensure safety. This sentiment was echoed by multiple AI leaders in the U.S., including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI CEO <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/elon-musk/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Elon Musk</a>.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen supported the call for AI companies to pause frontier development during her State of the Union speech on September 16, 2026, stating that “if the people developing the technology are clear, then we should be too.” Regarding AI in healthcare, she emphasized that “AI needs to empower our doctors.
