Bill Maher Critiques Macklemore's Comments on Gaza and Antisemitism

Comedian Bill Maher addressed Macklemore and other celebrities critical of Israel during the Israel-Hamas conflict on the first night of Rosh Hashanah. In the Friday night episode of HBO’s "Real Time," Maher expressed concern that characterizing the conflict in Gaza as genocide contributes to a rise in antisemitism. Maher criticized members of the Democratic Party for their stance on Israel, stating, "Because nowhere has this moral confusion become more obvious than in a place called Gaza." He referred to Gaza as a territory that was not part of original Israel but was won in a war and later returned as a peace gesture. Maher specifically targeted Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, for his calls to "Free Palestine" during a recent performance. Maher quoted Macklemore's assertion that the situation constitutes genocide, stating, "Actually, you don’t know s—. It’s not. It’s not a genocide. It’s a counterattack in a war." Macklemore had previously expressed his desire to raise awareness for Palestine during his concert, stating, "I want those words to be loud and clear, so that people all the way in Gaza to the occupied West Bank know that we have not forgotten about them." Maher continued to criticize the narrative that Israel is committing genocide in response to Hamas’ attack on October 7, 2023, calling it a "lie" and suggesting that it reflects poorly on the Democratic Party. He argued that false claims about the conflict contribute to rising antisemitism, stating, "If you really think someone is committing genocide, of course you have full permission to hate them." Jason Mudd, CEO of Axia Public Relations, commented on Macklemore's stance, noting that taking a political position can alienate a portion of an audience. Mudd advised that public figures should be aware of the potential consequences of their statements, particularly when addressing polarizing issues.
