Poll Shows Republican Christine Drazan Leading Democratic Governor Tina Kotek in Oregon

<p>A new poll indicates Republican candidate Christine Drazan has a slight lead over Democratic Governor Tina Kotek in Oregon, with Drazan at 45% and Kotek at 43%. The DHM Research survey, conducted on September 11 among 600 likely voters, shows Pacific Green Party candidate Brett Smith at 4%, with approximately 13% of respondents undecided. Drazan's lead is within the poll's 4-point margin of error.</p><p>The poll was commissioned by the business-backed group Grow Oregon, suggesting potential for a Republican victory in a state that has consistently elected Democratic governors since 1986.</p><p>Trey Rosser, Drazan’s campaign strategist, stated, “This poll confirms what we already see on the ground: Oregonians are ready for change, and they see Christine as the leader who can deliver it.” He criticized Kotek's performance on issues like homelessness and education, claiming that Oregonians are experiencing worsening conditions.</p><p>Despite the polling data, historical trends present challenges for Drazan, as Oregon is typically a Democratic stronghold. Kotek previously defeated Drazan in the 2022 election, receiving 47% of the vote compared to Drazan's 43.5%.</p><p>The GOP is hopeful that Green Party candidate Brett Smith can attract voters from Kotek's base, potentially aiding Drazan by splitting the Democratic vote.</p><p>The poll also reveals that 59% of respondents disapprove of Kotek's job performance, while 37% approve. Nearly 60% of voters believe Oregon is moving in the wrong direction.</p><p>Voter concerns in Oregon are primarily focused on affordability, with 87% identifying it as an important issue. Other significant concerns include K-12 education (85%), housing affordability (78%), and crime (73%).</p><p>Kotek has faced criticism during her term, including controversies surrounding the establishment of an “Office of the First Spouse” for her wife, Aimee Kotek Wilson, which was abandoned after public scrutiny.</p><p>Many of Kotek's campaign promises from 2022, particularly regarding housing production, have not been met, as the state has not achieved the goal of building 36,000 new housing units annually. The Cook Political Report currently rates the Oregon governor’s race as leaning Democrat.</p>
