Los Angeles Transportation Officials Audit Street Sweeping Ticket System After Errors

Los Angeles transportation officials are conducting an audit of the city’s street sweeping ticket system following the discovery that over 12,500 street sweeping tickets were issued on days when no sweeping was scheduled. This issue, which has resulted in nearly $1 million in fines, was highlighted by an investigation from L.A. Material. Initially, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) stated that it was proactively dismissing erroneous tickets and providing reimbursement instructions to affected motorists. However, the investigation revealed that only about 1,800 of the identified erroneous tickets had been canceled. In response to inquiries about the discrepancy, LADOT acknowledged that nearly 4,600 additional cancellations had been found but could not clarify why these were not included in earlier data. Following this revelation, LADOT announced the audit and committed to reimbursing any citations determined to have been issued in error. According to LADOT spokesperson Colin Sweeney, the department is dedicated to fair and transparent parking enforcement policies. The audit's impact is particularly significant in South Park, a low-income neighborhood, where fewer than 5% of the questionable citations issued were dismissed. One resident, Rufina Estrada, expressed concern about the financial burden of the tickets, stating, 'I can’t buy food if I have to pay a ticket.'
