Poll: Less than half of Americans expect midterm elections to be free and fair

A recent nationwide poll indicates that fewer than half of Americans, specifically 49%, expect the upcoming midterm elections to be free and fair. The poll, conducted by the Center for Transparent and Trusted Elections at UC San Diego, found that 23% of respondents do not expect the elections to be free and fair, while 28% were uncertain. Confidence in the accuracy of ballot counting varies by political affiliation, with 63% of Democrats, 58% of Republicans, and 49% of independent voters expressing some level of confidence in accurate counts. This marks a decline from the post-2020 election period, where 77% of Democrats, 82% of Republicans, and 73% of independents expressed confidence in the accuracy of vote counts. Lauren Prather, co-director of the center, noted that the findings reflect a decline in trust and highlight the complexity of what Americans consider a free and fair election, emphasizing the importance of accurate ballot counts alongside other factors such as voter access and freedom from intimidation. The poll also revealed that 32% of Americans are satisfied with the quality of K-12 education, with concerns driven by political divides. Regarding election integrity, 48% of Democrats and independents and 36% of Republicans expressed distrust in the fairness of congressional district lines. Concerns about foreign interference were noted, with 32% of Democrats, 42% of independents, and 48% of Republicans expressing distrust in the protection of U.S. elections. Additionally, 79% of Democrats, 76% of Republicans, and 75% of independents expressed concern about the impact of misleading AI-generated content on the midterms. The poll also highlighted significant partisan divides on issues such as ballot counting accuracy and the prevention of noncitizen voting. The survey, which included 5,016 American adults, was conducted from September 1-9, with a margin of error of plus or minus 1.4%.
