Romanian Farmers Protest Against Livestock Export Ban, Clashes with Police Occur

Dozens were injured as approximately 2,000 farmers protested in Bucharest on September 15, 2026, against the extension of a livestock export ban imposed by the European Union due to the highly contagious small ruminant plague. The protest, which involved shepherds and farmers, was reportedly supported by far-right groups. Violence erupted when some protesters began throwing rocks and metal barriers at police, who responded with tear gas. According to riot police, 26 individuals were detained, and 24 demonstrators and police officers required medical attention, with four being hospitalized. Both the government and opposition urged demonstrators to avoid violence. Protesters displayed banners calling for the resignation of the country's president and prime minister, and some chanted the name of far-right politician Calin Georgescu, who is currently on trial for actions against the constitutional order. George Simion, leader of the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), expressed support for the farmers but urged peaceful demonstration. The Romanian government described the protest as having 'degenerated into regrettable acts of violence' and called for calm. President Nicusor Dan condemned the violence and any attempts to turn a legitimate protest into chaos. Romanian shepherds had previously protested against the EU ban on live sheep exports, which is set to expire at the end of 2026. Romania, with a population of 19 million, is currently facing high inflation and a political crisis, following the downfall of a pro-European government in May due to a no-confidence motion.
