Senator Blumenthal Questions FBI Director Patel on Dismissal of Iran Specialists

Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, questioned FBI Director Kash Patel regarding the dismissal of a dozen agents and staff members from a counterintelligence unit focused on monitoring threats from Iran, just days before the U.S. launched military action against the country. Blumenthal expressed astonishment at the firings during a Senate hearing. Patel responded that the agents, who were part of a group known as CI-12, 'failed to meet the standards of the FBI.' He noted that at the time of their dismissal in February, the agents were involved in an investigation concerning President Donald Trump's handling of classified documents. Patel emphasized the importance of maintaining an unbiased FBI and stated, 'I will endeavor every single day to make sure we have no one there that is doing that.' Blumenthal countered that the firings politicized and weaponized the FBI against its own employees, asserting, 'They were assigned to it. They had no choice. What was the reason for firing them?' Patel replied that the individuals were terminated for 'weaponizing the Federal Bureau of Investigation.' The hearing was part of an oversight review of the FBI, which has recently reported a decrease in crime nationwide.
