A London Underground passenger has been accused of murdering an Elizabeth Line worker following an incident at Ilford station on December 4, 2024. Ayodele Jamgbadi, 29, allegedly punched Jorge Ortega, 61, after missing his train, resulting in Mr. Ortega's death two days later from a traumatic brain injury.
During proceedings at Inner London Crown Court, it was stated that Jamgbadi exhibited aggressive behavior after missing his train at approximately 8:45 PM. He reportedly kicked an advertisement frame, prompting Ortega and two colleagues from Transport for London (TfL) to intervene in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.
Prosecutor Patrick Dennis detailed that CCTV footage showed Jamgbadi kicking the advertisement frame and later approaching Ortega, who was backing away. Jamgbadi then allegedly punched Ortega in the face, causing him to fall and hit his head on the concrete platform.
Mr. Ortega was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries 48 hours later. Initially charged with grievous bodily harm, Jamgbadi's charge was upgraded to murder following Ortega's death. The court was informed that Jamgbadi is currently deemed unfit to enter a plea due to mental health issues.
Witness Mohammed Alim described the incident, stating that Jamgbadi appeared disturbed and aggressive before the attack. He recounted how Ortega was struck near the temple area and fell to the ground, losing consciousness. Alim intervened to prevent further aggression from Jamgbadi.
A pathologist confirmed that Ortega's injuries were consistent with a significant impact to the head from a fall. Ortega was a customer experience assistant for MTREL, the operator of the Elizabeth Line, and a member of the RMT union. Following the incident, RMT's general secretary expressed condolences to Ortega's family.
In a tribute, Ortega's son described him as a loving father and a skilled artist who was dedicated to his family and community.
