<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Actress Sally Field made a political reference during her 2026 Emmy Awards acceptance speech.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This year’s Emmys mostly avoided heavily political speeches. Former Late Show host Stephen Colbert, known for his criticism of President Donald Trump, also refrained from political commentary during his speech. However, Field, known for her roles in movies including Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) and Forrest Gump (1994), appeared to reference U.S. tensions with Canada amid ongoing trade disputes.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Field won the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie award for her role in Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures, which was filmed entirely in Canada.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Blessed Canada, our neighbors, our friends,” Field stated, referencing the tensions between the United States and Canada.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During Trump’s second term, he has made provocative comments regarding Canada, including suggesting it be made the 51st state. As the president initiated tariff wars with various countries, Canada was also affected.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The two countries have been engaged in an escalating trade conflict. Canada ended trade talks with the U.S. in August and subsequently imposed new retaliatory tariffs on approximately $20 billion of U.S. exports, including steel, dairy, and agricultural equipment, according to the White House.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In response, the Trump administration banned the importation of Canadian alcohol, dairy products, and certain motorcycles.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trump has also expressed concerns about Hollywood productions in foreign countries, including Canada, and proposed tariffs on movies produced outside the U.S., making Field’s comment particularly relevant.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Award shows have often served as platforms for celebrities to address political issues. For instance, during the 2025 Emmys, actress Hannah Einbinder made headlines for her remarks regarding immigration policy.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 2026 Grammy Awards also drew attention when Billie Eilish made a statement about land rights during her acceptance speech for Song of the Year.</p>
