Details of Rep. Mike Lawler's 2012 DWI Incident Revealed

Rep. Mike Lawler was driving at 74 mph with a blood-alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit when state troopers stopped him in 2012, according to police records reviewed by The Post. Lawler, a Republican from New York, disclosed the incident earlier this year after returning from a St. Patrick's Day event in New York City. The records indicate that on March 17, 2012, Lawler was driving his white Ford Escape SUV on the northbound Palisades Parkway in Rockland County when he was observed speeding. The arrest report noted that he was speeding in a 55 mph zone, following too closely, crossing hazard markings multiple times, and changing lanes unsafely. The trooper initiated a traffic stop at exit 13, where Lawler's vehicle stopped, blocking traffic. Lawler consented to a breathalyzer test, which recorded a blood-alcohol content of .14, nearly double the state legal limit of .08. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and later pleaded guilty to a reduced misdemeanor charge of driving while ability impaired. Lawler's office did not respond to a request for comment on Monday. He has previously expressed regret about the incident, stating that it was not his proudest moment and emphasizing the potential dangers of his actions. Lawler, who represents parts of Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, and Dutchess counties, was elected in 2022 and is facing a challenge from Democrat Cait Conley for the 17th Congressional District seat in November.
