Search and rescue operations ongoing after passenger ferry sinks in Vanuatu

<p>A search is underway in the South Pacific after a passenger ferry carrying 47 people sank between two islands in Vanuatu, an island nation east of Australia. The MV Matui sank on Friday, resulting in at least one confirmed death and more than 30 individuals reported missing, according to a statement from Vanuatu's Ministry of the Prime Minister.</p><p>Search and rescue teams have recovered one body and rescued 15 survivors. Efforts are now focused on the southeastern coastline of Vanuatu, where currents may have carried survivors, as reported by Matai Seremaiah, a member of Parliament for Luganville.</p><p>The ministry stated that search efforts in open waters are being scaled back. It expressed condolences to the families affected, stating, "Our hearts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones. To the survivors, we pray for your strength and recovery. To the families of those missing and those we have lost, please know that the nation stands with you in this time of grief." </p><p>Retired Coast Guard Capt. Aaron Davenport indicated that survival chances for those still missing depend on various factors, including water temperature, injuries, and access to flotation devices. He noted that as time passes, the chances of survival decrease due to lack of food and water and the risk of hypothermia.</p><p>The ministry suggested that the tragedy may have been caused by ignored marine warnings regarding strong winds and the possibility of the vessel being overloaded. It emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of life at sea, stating, "Ship owners must ensure their vessels are seaworthy, carry all required safety equipment, and have proper communication systems on board. Ignoring strong marine warnings puts lives at risk." </p><p>The government has initiated a full investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the sinking and to prevent similar incidents in the future.</p><p>In a related incident, another ferry disaster occurred on August 30 when the Filo Jet catamaran capsized off northern Cyprus, resulting in 14 deaths and 14 individuals still missing, while 239 people were rescued.</p>
