New York City Mayor Criticizes Federal Immigration Policies

<p>New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticized the federal government on Monday for its immigration policies, which he claims negatively impact immigrant communities in the city. His remarks came during an announcement regarding a lawsuit filed by his administration and five other sanctuary jurisdictions against the Trump administration over a new rule that broadens the criteria for determining whether immigrants are likely to become a public charge.</p><p>"The federal government has waged a campaign of violence and terror," Mamdani stated. He accused Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of invasive actions, including entering homes, workplaces, and schools, targeting individuals seeking refuge and opportunity. Mamdani described these actions as detrimental to the civic fabric and shared values of the community.</p><p>He acknowledged the contributions of immigrants to New York City, stating that they play vital roles in various sectors, including public services and infrastructure. "Immigrants from every country, from every continent, who speak every language and worship in every conceivable way, drive our buses and our trains, teach our children how to read, and tend to us when we are sick," he said. He also highlighted the historical role of immigrants in advocating for labor rights.</p><p>The coalition, which includes Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Santa Clara County, and King County, is challenging the Trump administration’s revised public charge rule, which is set to take effect on Friday. This rule, issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), expands the discretion of immigration officers to consider noncash benefits, such as Medicaid and housing vouchers, when assessing public charge status.</p><p>Previously, under guidelines from the Biden administration, officers could only consider whether applicants were likely to become "primarily dependent" on cash benefits. The USCIS has stated that the new rule aims to ensure noncitizens are self-reliant and not dependent on taxpayer-funded benefits.</p><p>Mamdani criticized the changes as a "gross illegality" that could lead to significant harm. He expressed concern that families, including those with U.S. citizen children, might avoid essential services due to fear of repercussions from immigration enforcement. "Make no mistake, this is an undisguised effort to strip New Yorkers of the services they rely on, the public benefits they are entitled to," he said.</p><p>USCIS spokesperson Zach Kahler defended the rule, stating it is designed to protect American taxpayers from subsidizing individuals who may become dependent on public benefits. He emphasized that USCIS is committed to ensuring the safety and financial well-being of Americans. DHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.</p>
