New York City Mayor Mamdani Criticizes Federal Immigration Policies

<p>New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticized the federal government on Monday for its immigration policies, describing them as a "campaign of violence and terror" against immigrant communities. He made these remarks during an announcement that he and five other sanctuary jurisdictions are suing the Trump administration over a new rule that expands how immigration officials assess whether applicants are likely to become a public charge.</p><p>"The federal government has waged a campaign of violence and terror," Mamdani stated. He accused Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of conducting raids in homes, workplaces, and schools, targeting individuals seeking refuge and opportunity. Mamdani characterized these actions as detrimental to the civic fabric and shared values of the community.</p><p>He acknowledged the contributions of immigrants to New York City, stating that they play vital roles in various sectors, including public services and infrastructure. "Immigrants from every country, from every continent, who speak every language and worship in every conceivable way, drive our buses and our trains, teach our children how to read, and tend to us when we are sick," he said. He further noted that immigrants have historically fought for labor rights, including the eight-hour workday.</p><p>The coalition, which includes Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Santa Clara County, and King County, is challenging the Trump administration’s revised public charge rule, which is set to take effect on Friday. The new guidelines, issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in July, will allow officials to consider noncash benefits, such as Medicaid and housing vouchers, in their assessments.</p><p>Previously, under the Biden administration, the criteria focused solely on cash benefits. According to USCIS, the rule aims to ensure that noncitizens remain self-reliant and do not depend on taxpayer-funded benefits.</p><p>Mamdani labeled the changes as a "gross illegality" that could result in "irreparable damage." He expressed concern that families, including those with U.S. citizen children, may avoid essential services due to fear of immigration repercussions. "Make no mistake, this is an undisguised effort to strip New Yorkers of the services they rely on, the public benefits they are entitled to," he stated.</p><p>USCIS spokesperson Zach Kahler defended the policy, stating that it aims to protect American taxpayers from subsidizing individuals who may become dependent on public benefits. "The Trump administration is upholding the rule of law and protecting American taxpayers," Kahler said. DHS did not respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.</p>
