AI Leaders Advocate for Slowing Down Development of Advanced AI

<p>Major AI labs have recently shifted their approach regarding the development of frontier AI technologies, moving away from a competitive mindset. This change was prompted by concerns over the potential dangers and unpredictability of advanced AI systems. Dario Amodei of Anthropic emphasized the need to slow down AI capabilities in a lengthy essay, warning against a 'race to the bottom' driven by commercial pressures that could heighten catastrophic risks.</p><p>Following Amodei's remarks, other prominent figures in the AI sector echoed similar sentiments. Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, expressed his agreement on social media and indicated that discussions about pacing AI development were ongoing at OpenAI. Demis Hassabis, Chief Scientist at Alphabet and co-founder of Google DeepMind, supported Amodei's perspective and reiterated his call for an industry-wide standards body. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also welcomed the focus on research and deliberate pacing to ensure alignment in AI design, ahead of the release of a comprehensive 'humanist AI' code of conduct for Microsoft's models.</p>
