Long Island to Open 80-Mile Trail to Montauk in Honor of Teddy Roosevelt

Long Island is set to open an 80-mile trail in honor of former President Teddy Roosevelt, extending from his former residence in Nassau County to Montauk. Local officials announced the trail, described as a "tourism trail," during a press event on Monday, coinciding with the 125th anniversary of Roosevelt's swearing in as president. A Roosevelt impersonator participated in the announcement alongside Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine and other officials in Sayville. The impersonator emphasized the importance of experiencing history in person rather than solely through books or classrooms, stating, "To have a trail is much more interesting — you can absorb so much more about [the history] by being there." The trail will follow the historical route that Roosevelt would travel on horseback from his home in Oyster Bay to his cousin's house in Sayville, continuing east to Montauk. Historical signs will be placed along the trail to provide facts about the locations. Romaine expressed the significance of the trail in preserving the region's history, noting that it traverses areas familiar to Roosevelt. He stated, "The trail cuts across Nassau County all the way to Eastern Suffolk — all places that were familiar to Teddy Roosevelt, all places that are beautiful to visit. It’s a great thing to talk about our history." The county is currently in the planning phase, and no official cost estimate has been provided yet. Roosevelt, who became the youngest president in history at age 42 in 1901, was a noted conservationist and lived on Long Island as an adult.
