Clippers Seek Leadership Amidst Penalties Following Kawhi Leonard Trade

The NBA has announced penalties against the Los Angeles Clippers for violating salary cap rules related to star forward Kawhi Leonard. As a result, franchise owner Steve Ballmer has been suspended from league and team activities for one year, and president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank has received a six-month suspension. Amid these changes, questions arise regarding who will lead the Clippers' basketball operations. The Clippers recently finalized a trade that will send Leonard back to the Toronto Raptors, which includes Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round draft picks (2031 and 2033), one first-round draft pick swap (2027), and two second-round picks in return. The trade details were agreed upon in late June but were delayed until the NBA's investigation concluded. General manager Trent Redden, a long-time executive with the Clippers, has emerged as a key figure in the front office and is expected to take a leading role in basketball operations. Redden previously served as an assistant general manager and was promoted to general manager in 2023. He has a background that includes a degree from Southern Methodist University and experience with the Cleveland Cavaliers before joining the Clippers. Mark Hughes, the Clippers' senior vice president/assistant general manager, is also moving up in the organization following the penalties. Frank praised both Redden and Hughes for their leadership and expertise in player evaluation and strategy.
