<p class="wp-block-paragraph">California Governor Gavin Newsom stated that he would not run for president in 2028 if former Vice President Kamala Harris entered the race.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Newsom has been considered a potential front-runner for the 2028 election, with speculation about his intentions growing since President Donald Trump took office. In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Newsom emphasized that he would not run if Harris did, describing it as a logical decision.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Of course not. Why would I? I wouldn’t do that to her. I wouldn’t do it to me. Why would I?” Newsom said. “I wouldn’t waste everyone’s time. Who needs that?”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When pressed by Tapper, Newsom elaborated that a competing candidacy would likely be detrimental to both candidates.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“First of all, electorally, it’s a gift from God for everybody else,” he stated. “They enjoy the hell out of it. Mutual assured destruction. It services no greater good.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite Tapper's mention of Harris's previous unsuccessful runs, Newsom maintained his position.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I know her base of supporters,” he said. “I know her friends. The Venn diagram on that is just pure crossover. It’s not. I wouldn’t do that to people.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If Newsom adheres to this pledge, it would eliminate one of the prominent Democratic candidates for the 2028 election. Analysts generally consider a third run by Harris to be likely.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Current polling shows Harris leading among potential Democratic candidates, often ahead of Newsom by double digits. A recent poll commissioned by the Financial Times indicates Harris with 29% support, followed by Newsom at 14%, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at 11%, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at 9%, and Governor Josh Shapiro at 8%.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Given the early stage of the race, polling results may fluctuate significantly.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the Republican side, Vice President JD Vance is currently the frontrunner in most polls, followed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in second place. A recent Financial Times poll shows Vance with 42% support, Rubio at 21%, Governor Ron DeSantis at 9%, and Donald Trump Jr. at 7%.</p>
