Zelenskyy Offers to Pause Strikes on Russia if Critical Infrastructure is Protected

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Monday that Ukraine is prepared to cease its strikes on Russian territory if allies can secure a genuine commitment from Russia not to target Ukraine's critical infrastructure. This statement followed U.S. President Donald Trump's claim on social media that Russia and Ukraine had reached an agreement "not to hit" each other's energy infrastructure, although Trump did not provide further details regarding this alleged agreement. Russia has not commented on Trump's assertion. Previous attempts to negotiate a ceasefire have often collapsed quickly, with both sides accusing each other of violations. Trump called on Zelenskyy to stop targeting Russian oil refineries and other infrastructure, asserting that these attacks are contributing to a global diesel shortage. He attributed the surge in diesel prices in the U.S. to the conflict, while also noting that restrictions in oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and damage to refining systems in Russia are impacting the energy market. Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine has proposed that partners assist in securing a ceasefire agreement with Russia, reiterating that the war must come to an end. He emphasized that a de-escalation regarding critical infrastructure could serve as a first step toward peace. Following Trump's remarks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that any call for Kyiv to halt strikes on civilian economic infrastructure would be welcomed. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte remarked that recent Russian drone strikes near the Ukraine-Poland border would prompt NATO to enhance its support for Ukraine, describing the attacks as indicative of Moscow's increasing desperation.
