Rep. Al Green to Initiate House Vote on Impeaching President Trump

<p>Representative Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, announced on September 14, 2026, that he plans to force a vote on impeaching President Donald Trump, citing the killing of two U.S. citizens by federal immigration officers earlier this year.</p><p>Green introduced a privileged resolution on the House floor, which allows any lawmaker to compel the entire chamber to consider a bill within two legislative days.</p><p>This requires House Republican leaders to hold a vote on the measure by the end of the day on September 16, 2026.</p><p>The vote is expected to pose challenges for Democrats as they prepare for the upcoming midterm elections in November.</p><p>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, has previously expressed reluctance regarding impeachment, stating that Democrats are focused on addressing issues such as high living costs that affect everyday Americans.</p><p>Jeffries and 127 other House Democrats previously voted with Republicans to dismiss an earlier impeachment effort by Green in June 2025.</p><p>This latest attempt may be Green's final public action against Trump after he lost his primary to a younger Democrat advocating for generational change.</p><p>Green has been removed from both of Trump's addresses to a joint session of Congress during this term. During Trump's first address after returning to the White House, Green waved a cane and shouted while the president spoke. Earlier this year, during Trump's State of the Union address, Green held up a sign reading, "Black People Aren't Apes." </p><p>Democratic leaders have indicated they are preparing for numerous investigations into the Trump administration and the president's associates if they regain control in the midterms.</p><p>Green has urged that Democrats should not wait for these investigations, demanding in a letter to House colleagues that a vote on impeachment be conducted immediately. He stated, "To those who say, 'Wait until next year' and 'Buckle up' when the investigations start, I say: How many more lives must we lose, and how many more loved ones of victims have to plead for help before the self-evident evidence from videos and President Trump’s own words compel us to act?" He added, "The available overwhelming evidence sufficiently demonstrates that President Trump is unfit and dangerous to our democracy."</p><p>The current impeachment resolution characterizes Trump as "a great threat to democracy and the Constitution for current high crimes and misdemeanors," referencing the killing of two American citizens amid a nationwide crackdown on illegal immigration in U.S. cities.</p>
