US President Donald Trump has described concerns regarding the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) as a "sick conspiracy," asserting that such efforts primarily benefit China. His comments came in response to calls from technology leaders, including Dario Amodei of Anthropic and Sam Altman of OpenAI, for increased government regulation of AI. Recent incidents have raised alarms about the potential risks associated with AI technologies.
Trump stated on his Truth Social account, "The only control or ‘guardrails' that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!" He claimed that his administration has already taken steps to prevent Anthropic from engaging in harmful activities with AI technology.
The Pentagon had previously identified Anthropic's models as a security risk and imposed a temporary ban on one of its advanced models. Trump further commented, "There is a SICK conspiracy going on against AI and Data Centers, and the only one that is happy about it is China."
Amodei expressed concerns over the weekend about the uncontrolled global development of AI, warning that AI-led agents could potentially take over the internet within six to twelve months. In response to these developments, Microsoft has published a code of conduct aimed at ensuring human oversight of AI systems. Following these announcements, AI-related stocks experienced declines, including a 3.5% drop for chip maker Nvidia and a 1.7% decrease for SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk.
