Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is collaborating with former Trump adviser Steve Bannon and former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon to advocate that artificial intelligence (AI) "should serve humanity," following warnings from industry leaders about potential loss of human control over AI. This coalition will speak at the Future of Life Institute’s "Pro-Human Assembly" event on September 14, 2026, to support the group’s "Pro-Human AI Declaration," as reported by Axios.

Other speakers at the event include Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Congressional Progressive Caucus Chairman Greg Casar (D-TX), and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten. This gathering highlights the unusual alliances formed in the AI debate across the political spectrum.

Bannon stated, "The Oligarchs are finally being forced to admit they’ve lied from the beginning about the dangers of acceleration with zero guardrails — they’ve put the nation and mankind in jeopardy." The collaboration between Bannon and Sanders is significant as it shows agreement between populists and nationalists from the Republican Party and socialists, a trend also seen with right-wing influencer Tucker Carlson endorsing Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul el Sayed.

El Sayed supports reformed capitalism and has proposed policies similar to those endorsed by leading socialists, including support for government control over a significant portion of the largest AI companies and a one-time 50% tax on their stock.

The event will focus on a platform advocating for pre-development review and independent oversight of AI models, ensuring human control over AI, and prohibiting the development of superintelligence until significant concessions are made. Sanders has recently introduced legislation to ban superintelligence.

Several industry leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, have suggested that superintelligent AI may have already been reached. Altman remarked, "We could lose control of the future to AI," emphasizing the need for alignment and safety techniques to keep pace with advancements in AI capabilities.

Following Coxon's departure from Anthropic, CEO Dario Amodei acknowledged the significant risks in the AI industry and called for a slowdown in technological advancements and the implementation of guardrails. He expressed a belief in the potential of AI to improve human life but stressed the importance of developing the technology responsibly.
