Body of Missing Runner Found in South Africa

South African police have confirmed the death of a jogger, Elizabeth Moselakgomo, who went missing during a routine run last week. Her body was identified by relatives on Monday after it was discovered east of Johannesburg on Saturday. Moselakgomo is one of five women whose bodies have been found half-naked and bruised in the same area, Kempton Park. Police stated they are not linking the deaths to a serial killer but noted that the similarities are concerning enough to issue a public warning. A jogger who knew Moselakgomo expressed fear over the situation, stating that women in South Africa often feel unsafe. Police have advised women in the Kempton Park area to avoid walking or running alone, particularly in isolated areas. According to UN Women, South Africa has some of the highest levels of gender-based violence in the world, with the rate at which women are killed five times higher than the global average. Moselakgomo's body was found badly bruised and partially clothed. Just hours before, another woman's half-naked body was discovered about 25 kilometers away. A passer-by found this body on his way to work, as reported by police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe. One arrest has been made in connection with the first body, and the individual remains in police custody. A task team has been established to investigate the murders, which have sparked renewed outrage and fear among South Africans. Tributes have been paid to Moselakgomo, who was known affectionately as 'Tsontso.' Many South Africans have shared their fears regarding women's safety in the country. Advocacy group Women for Change expressed anger over the situation, questioning the effectiveness of police protection. Moselakgomo's family thanked the public for their support in searching for her, particularly her eight-year-old daughter, who raised the alarm about her disappearance. Authorities are still working to identify the remaining bodies.
