Trump Rejects Request from Lindsay Clancy's Lawyer for Involvement

<p>President Donald Trump on Sunday rejected a request from Lindsay Clancy's defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, to get involved in the case or to pardon Clancy, who has admitted to killing her three young children.</p><p>Trump described the case as a tragedy and acknowledged Reddington as a competent lawyer, but indicated that Clancy is facing state charges, which limits his ability to intervene. "It's a very sad situation. ... There is no winner there — there's no win no matter what you do; three children are dead," Trump stated to the press. He added, "It's actually a state situation, not a federal."</p><p>When asked if he would pressure the state prosecutor, Trump responded, "I hope they can work it out, that's something they have to work out. There is no win there."</p><p>Reddington had called on Trump to pardon Clancy following a mistrial declared earlier this month. The jury deliberated for several days, but ultimately, one juror did not agree that Clancy was not guilty by reason of insanity in the killings, according to other jurors.</p><p>Reddington's appeal appeared to be more strategic than practical, as Clancy is facing state charges for the killings. When questioned about this discrepancy, Reddington suggested that Trump could pressure the state prosecutor. "Trump would be able to reach out to one of his Department of Justice people, maybe talk to [District Attorney] Tim Cruz, and maybe bring some pressure," Reddington said.</p><p>When pressed on why he would want the president to influence a local DA on a state prosecution, Reddington replied, "I don't care if Mahatma Gandhi came down and pressured him into doing something, because I do not believe that this is ... a righteous prosecution."</p><p>It remains unclear if Clancy will be retried for her crimes, as that decision is up to the state.</p>
