Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts</a> may close as early as Tuesday, according to an internal memo that indicates a worsening financial situation and highlights safety concerns regarding the main building.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A 57-page assessment, obtained by the <em>Washington Post</em> and shared prior to a special board meeting, warns that the Kennedy Center is nearing “certain financial collapse” and outlines potential strategies to maintain operations. The center is currently facing a deficit of approximately $23 million due to declining revenue and rising expenses.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The board of trustees, appointed by President Donald Trump, has recommended the immediate closure of the main building, which aligns with the president’s plans for renovation and revitalization of the facility. Programming may be moved to other venues while the building is closed, although the Reach, the center’s newer expansion, could remain operational.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The assessment suggests that adding Trump’s name to the building could potentially aid in fundraising efforts.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kennedy Center officials have also reported structural damage to the main building caused by recent storms in the <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/tag/washington-dc/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Washington, D.C.</a> area, including a ceiling collapse on September 4, which has intensified calls for renovations. No injuries were reported from this incident.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trump had proposed a significant two-year renovation of the building, citing deferred maintenance as a reason for its poor condition. Congress allocated $257 million for repairs and renovations through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, the renovation plans have encountered legal challenges, including a lawsuit from Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH), an ex officio member of the center’s board, aimed at blocking the proposed closure.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A federal judge had previously blocked the closure in May but permitted a new vote after a more comprehensive review, leading the board to reconsider its options in August.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kennedy Center representatives stated that they would not rename the center to include Trump’s name but would incorporate it in other ways. Beatty subsequently filed an <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/entertainment/4696159/beatty-emergency-order-trump-kennedy-center/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">emergency motion</a>, asserting that the proposed actions were unacceptable.</p>
