Michael Mayer is set to take on a larger role when the Las Vegas Raiders open their season against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, following the news that teammate Brock Bowers will miss the game due to minor knee surgery. Mayer, a fourth-year tight end, was already expected to play a significant part in the Raiders' offense under offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, which emphasizes the tight end position. With Bowers sidelined, Mayer's responsibilities will expand beyond initial expectations.
Mayer expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, "I love catching the football. I love scoring touchdowns, and more importantly, I love winning." Over his first three NFL seasons, Mayer has recorded 83 catches for 788 yards, a performance that some might view as modest for a player stepping into a more prominent role.
Before Bowers gained recognition as a standout player, Mayer was a highly regarded tight end at Notre Dame, finishing his college career with 180 catches for 2,099 yards and 18 touchdowns, setting school records for tight ends. The Raiders selected him with the 35th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, anticipating he would become a key component of their offense.
Bowers, drafted in the first round the following year, shifted the focus away from Mayer, who was expected to be a foundational player. Bowers' unique skill set as a versatile offensive weapon quickly made him a focal point in the Raiders' passing game.
Mayer now has the chance to demonstrate his capabilities. He noted, "I’m trying to be the best version of myself and trying to know the game plan as best I can. Try to play as fast as I can, and just let the game come to me."
Mayer has previously experienced increased responsibilities when Bowers missed five games last season due to injury, providing him with a glimpse of what to expect against Miami. Kubiak's offensive scheme, which utilizes multiple-tight-end formations, positions Mayer to be heavily involved in the game plan.
With Bowers unavailable, Mayer is expected to see an increase in routes, targets, and opportunities. However, he is not expected to replicate Bowers' unique abilities but rather to leverage his own strengths as a former elite college tight end. Mayer's size and skill set can be advantageous against smaller defensive backs, particularly on third downs.
The absence of Bowers will likely alter the Dolphins' defensive strategy, allowing them to focus their resources elsewhere. This change places additional pressure on Mayer and his teammates to capitalize on the situation.
Mayer emphasized the collective nature of the team's approach, stating, "This is a business; it’s a profession, and things happen. We know how the NFL operates. We know how it works, and I think everybody’s just coming together to help this offense."
While Mayer is prepared to shoulder more responsibility, he acknowledges the importance of teamwork in replacing Bowers' production. He expressed concern for Bowers, saying, "We all feel horrible. Brock’s one of my good friends here."
As Mayer steps into the spotlight, he aims to remind everyone of his potential and why he was once a highly touted prospect in college football.
