Succession Dispute Emerges in Tooro Kingdom Following King Oyo's Death

UBC TV news presenter Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma has been selected as the new monarch of the Tooro Kingdom in Uganda. This decision has sparked a succession dispute just days before the burial of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who ruled for over 30 years and died at the age of 34 while undergoing cancer treatment in the United States last month. Royal clan elders announced Kijanangoma, 56, as the successor, but this has been contested by the late king's family. Princess Ruth Komuntale, the late king's sister, stated that King Oyo had left a will in 2022 naming his young son as his successor, although the child's identity has not been disclosed. Queen Best Kemigisa has called for peace during the mourning period, expressing concern over the family's ability to grieve due to military presence at the palace. Thousands of mourners are expected to attend the burial at the royal tombs in Fort Portal, western Uganda. The Tooro monarchy, while lacking formal political power, holds cultural significance in the region. The succession process in Tooro differs from that of other monarchies, as the next king is chosen from the Babiito clan. The succession committee stated they had the authority to select Kijanangoma, having conducted consultations and deliberations. The enthronement date has not yet been determined, and mediation efforts are being overseen by Culture Minister Henry Tumukunde, with expected outcomes after discussions with President Yoweri Museveni and cultural leaders.
