Elaine Pelino and Aaron Guckian Compete in Close GOP Primary Race

<p>Elaine Pelino, a former NFL cheerleader and publisher, is competing against Aaron Guckian, a former aide to former Governor Donald Carcieri, in a GOP primary that remained too close to call by early Thursday morning. The race focuses on experience and qualifications as Republicans seek a candidate to appeal to voters in a historically Democratic-leaning state.</p><p>In the last election, Democratic candidate Daniel McKee, who is the current governor of Rhode Island, defeated Republican challenger Ashley Kalus with 57.9% of the vote compared to Kalus's 38.9%.</p><p>Pelino has outlined several priorities in her campaign, including merit-based hiring, support for law enforcement, immigration law, and school choice. "This is what I’m going to do. I’m learning. Everything is a learning [curve] because I’m not a lifetime politician. I’m here because I love Rhode Island. And I want them to have a great life. I want them to live in a prosperous and safe place. We should get all the illegals out of here," Pelino stated at a candidate forum.</p><p>Before entering politics, Pelino had diverse experiences, including work as a model, in media, and as a cheerleader for the Houston Oilers, a team that later became the NFL’s Tennessee Titans. In 2011, she founded Tigress magazine, which published 12 issues.</p><p>Guckian has adopted a more policy-focused approach, pledging to reform Rhode Island’s permitting process, enhance service delivery, and manage the state’s revenue more effectively. He noted that the state budget has increased significantly, from $9.3 billion in 2019 to over $14 billion projected between 2024 and 2026, representing nearly 50% growth in five years, even as federal COVID relief funds are set to expire. "Rhode Island made a critical mistake. We built permanent commitments on temporary federal money," Guckian said on his campaign website.</p><p>Once one of them secures the primary, either Pelino or Guckian will face challenges in the general election scheduled for November 3.</p>
