DALLAS — Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, made a surprise appearance at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention, which has led to speculation about his loyalty to the Democratic Party. Fetterman introduced Republican Senator Dave McCormick during the event, prompting discussions about his potential departure from the Democratic caucus. In a statement to Fox News Digital, Fetterman clarified that he remains committed to the Democratic Party, despite challenges he has faced from within.
Fetterman stated, "My remarks introduced Dave McCormick as a great American and friend. We are in different parties, but we are both Team PA. We have delivered hundreds of millions of dollars back to Pennsylvania, fought for improved transportation and affordable housing, and the Steel Way of Life." He also emphasized, "I’m a lifelong Democrat who votes overwhelmingly with my party — and should the Senate flip in November, I will still be the 51st vote that I ran on."
Fetterman was elected to the Senate in 2022 after defeating Dr. Mehmet Oz, securing a narrow Democratic majority while campaigning on a progressive platform. However, he has since expressed concerns about the direction of the Democratic Party, particularly regarding its stance on Israel. Earlier this year, he indicated that he might leave the party if it became more entrenched in anti-Israel policies.
Fetterman has also disagreed with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democratic colleagues on various issues, including President Donald Trump’s policies and government shutdown negotiations. Following reports of his aides alleging that he often neglects his official duties, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota, noted that many in the GOP would welcome Fetterman should he choose to join their party. For now, Fetterman has stated he will remain with the Democrats, regardless of the Senate's outcome in the upcoming elections.
