Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) made a video appearance on Wednesday, praising his Pennsylvania colleague, Senator David McCormick (R-PA), during the Republican Party’s midterm convention held in Texas.

Fetterman expressed a willingness to collaborate across party lines, stating his intention to work with President Donald Trump in his remarks introducing McCormick. He commended McCormick for his efforts in supporting America’s steel industry, highlighting his approach to bipartisan cooperation.

“Yes, I’m a Democrat,” Fetterman stated to attendees at the two-day event. “Why am I here talking to you today? Because, well, I’m a commonsense Democrat. I’m always going to stand with America. I’m always going to reject the extremes in socialism and that anti-American way of life.”

Fetterman further remarked, “Dave McCormick is the kind of senator that gets the job done, and he’s going to fight for Pennsylvania. I’m proud to count him as my friend. Right back over my shoulder. That’s the iconic U.S. Steel mill, and that’s exactly the kind of thing that will work together, and we’ll work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life right here in the Steel Valley.”

This appearance comes amid speculation regarding Fetterman potentially leaving the Democratic Party due to his opposition to certain factions within it, particularly those he perceives as anti-Israel or socialist. Earlier this year, he indicated that he would leave the party if it officially became anti-Israel, but later stated in an interview with the New York Times that he would “never” leave his party.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) expressed a desire for Fetterman to remain a Democrat, noting that constituents in Pennsylvania have shown increasing opposition to him. Schumer stated, “The people in our caucus very much like him and respect him. And we’re a big-tent party; we can have a lot of different views in that party.”
