Billy Joel discusses recovery from brain surgery following diagnosis

Billy Joel shared details about his recovery after undergoing brain surgery due to a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) in 2025. During a segment on SiriusXM’s The Billy Joel Channel, the 77-year-old musician stated, "I’m not going anywhere. I’m here. I’m still here." NPH is characterized by the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the skull, which can lead to various symptoms, including balance issues. Joel mentioned that he initially resisted the recommendation for surgery but later understood its potential benefits for his balance and memory. Following the surgery, he observed improvements in these areas. However, doctors advised him to stop performing live due to the risk of sustaining concussions from the loud music, which could further damage his brain. Joel emphasized the importance of following medical advice and undergoing physical therapy for his recovery. He had previously announced his diagnosis in May 2025 after canceling tour performances following a fall during a show in Connecticut. At that time, he reassured fans that he was expected to make a full recovery.
