Manchester United has garnered four points from their first four Premier League matches. Manager Michael Carrick expressed confidence in the team's ability to compete with top European clubs as they return to the Champions League for the first time in three years. Carrick, who was appointed as the permanent manager after leading the team to a third-place finish last season, is looking forward to the club's opening match in the Champions League group stage against Azerbaijani champions Sabah at Old Trafford in Manchester on Thursday.
Carrick stated, "It’s a magical competition. It’s where we all want to be. When you’re out of it, you realize how special it is, and when you’re in it, you want to make the most of it." He emphasized the importance of taking the competition seriously, saying, "We’re here to do business and go as far as we possibly can."
Historically, Manchester United has struggled in their recent Champions League appearances, having exited at the group stage in two of the last three tournaments and not advancing past the last 16 since 2019. The team has had a slow start to the current Premier League season, earning only four points from matches against Hull, Ipswich, and Everton. However, Carrick noted that the team has performed well against stronger opponents in the past, including victories over Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea last season.
Carrick remarked, "I think we’re capable of doing some really good things in this competition, and going further down the line," while acknowledging that some players are new to the Champions League experience. He expressed confidence in his squad's strength and experience in European competitions.
Unlike many Premier League rivals who have made significant investments in their squads, Manchester United has only strengthened their midfield during the transfer window. Carrick highlighted the need for the players to adapt to a more demanding schedule, stating, "We play Thursday, Sunday, Wednesday and it’s what we’re here for. It’s about managing the group and having trust in everyone able to play."
Benjamin Sesko is expected to be in contention for his first start of the season after scoring as a substitute in a recent 2-2 draw against Everton. Carrick also confirmed that Matthijs de Ligt is nearing a return after nearly a year out due to a back injury.
