Stefany Shaheen Wins Democratic Primary in New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District

<p>Stefany Shaheen, the daughter of retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen, won a Democratic primary early Wednesday morning in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District. This race has attracted multiple Democratic candidates.</p><p>Her victory positions her for a significant race as Democrats aim to gain control of the House of Representatives, following the announcement by incumbent Rep. Chris Pappas, D-N.H., that he is pursuing a U.S. Senate seat.</p><p>Pappas has represented the district since 2019 and last won reelection with 54.0% of the vote against Republican challenger Russell Prescott.</p><p>The primary featured a competitive field of Democratic challengers, including Maura Sullivan, a Marine veteran and former Obama administration official, Carleigh Beriont, a union organizer, and Christian Urrutia, an Army National Guard officer and international law attorney. Urrutia later dropped out and endorsed Shaheen, who emerged as a frontrunner.</p><p>Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who announced her retirement in March, endorsed her daughter, stating, "I’m so proud that Stefany is answering the call to serve the district she was born and raised in, where she has started a business, worked on the Portsmouth City Council and advocated for affordable health care and clean water."</p><p>Stefany Shaheen's campaign priorities include Medicare for All, expanding tax breaks for first-time homebuyers, and overhauling Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).</p><p>Maura Sullivan highlighted her military service and experience in the Obama administration, stating her commitment to national security and healthcare reform. Sullivan's platform includes addressing price gouging, enhancing the VA, opposing tariffs, and increasing federal housing investments.</p><p>Having won the primary, Shaheen will move on to the general election scheduled for November 3.</p>
