Sinkhole Damages Nicolas Cage's Malibu Property

<p>A sinkhole measuring approximately 30 feet by 30 feet opened outside actor Nicolas Cage's Malibu home on Tuesday morning, following heavy rains and high surf from Tropical Storm Marie. The sinkhole affected part of the driveway and caused asphalt, concrete, a section of a privacy fence, and a construction-site porta potty to fall into it.</p><p>First responders were called to the scene at around 5:45 a.m. for a suspected gas line break on Sea Level Drive. Upon arrival, the Los Angeles County Fire Department discovered that the sinkhole had damaged a gas line, which was subsequently shut off for repairs.</p><p>No injuries were reported, and it appeared that Cage's home was unoccupied at the time of the incident. KTLA's Rich Prickett noted that substantial damage occurred to the driveway and mentioned that the house seemed to be undergoing renovations.</p><p>A fire department spokesman indicated that coastal erosion contributed to the sinkhole's formation, coinciding with high tides and surf from the tropical storm. Cage purchased the property in 2024, which was originally built by Jose Liberman of Liberman Broadcasting in the 1990s.</p><p>A representative for Cage did not respond to inquiries for comment. Lenard Liberman, after the sale, shared with The New York Times that the home held significant memories for his family.</p>
