Judge Orders Alex Murdaugh's Murder Retrial to Be Moved to Sumter County

<p>A South Carolina judge on Tuesday granted a request by Alex Murdaugh to relocate the double-murder retrial for the attorney. Judge Debra McCaslin ruled that the trial will take place in Sumter County. Defense lawyers argued that the jury pool in Colleton County was tainted by extensive media coverage of the original trial.</p><p>In her order, McCaslin stated that Murdaugh can receive a fair trial in Sumter County, noting that it provides adequate security measures, courtroom facilities, and technological capabilities for the proceedings.</p><p>The judge considered several factors, including the financial impact on Colleton County, the convenience of witnesses, courthouse security, and the transportation and security of Murdaugh, as well as the courtroom facilities and technological capabilities available.</p><p>Murdaugh's attorneys had suggested either Charleston or Richland County as potential venues before McCaslin made her ruling.</p><p>Murdaugh was granted a new trial after the South Carolina Supreme Court determined that his right to a fair proceeding was violated due to improper influence by former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill during his 2023 murder trial.</p><p>As a result, the court unanimously overturned his 2023 convictions and two life sentences. Murdaugh is charged with murder and weapons offenses related to the June 2021 shooting deaths of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, at their family estate.</p><p>During his 2023 trial, Murdaugh admitted to misleading investigators about his whereabouts shortly before the shootings but has consistently denied killing either of them.</p>
