<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The administration of New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has initiated an investigation into misconduct allegations against Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell, who also serves as the state's secretary of state.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Governor Sherrill stated, "I know that jobs of public trust impact the lives of everyday people and I deeply respect the oaths and responsibilities of these positions. Because of this respect, I demand that everyone in my administration hold themselves to the highest standards and put their obligations to public service first."</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">She emphasized the seriousness of addressing reports of inappropriate behavior or misconduct, asserting that any credible report must be fully examined and addressed. Sherrill indicated that appropriate action would be taken if warranted by the evidence.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sherrill's statement follows multiple media reports indicating that Caldwell is under investigation for alleged inappropriate behavior toward women and potential ethics violations.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to the New Jersey Globe, Sherrill's administration has appointed former state Attorney General Christopher Porrino to lead the investigation, which includes probing individuals alongside Shontae Gray, a former assistant U.S. attorney and deputy state attorney general.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While Sherrill addressed her administration's standards in her statement, she did not mention Caldwell by name. She reiterated her commitment to the safety and privacy of all individuals, stating, "Anyone must know that they can come forward with a complaint and they will be safe from retaliation. The subject of a complaint must also know and be confident that their rights will be protected as well and they will receive a fair and thorough review. Let me be clear, I do not back down from tough fights or tough conversations, and I will always put the interests of New Jerseyans first."</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Washington Examiner has sought comments from both Caldwell's and Sherrill's offices.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">New Jersey GOP Chairwoman Christine Giordano Hanlon stated that the public deserves more information regarding the allegations. She posed several questions, including the number of complainants, the timing of the alleged inappropriate activities, and whether Caldwell was under investigation while serving as acting governor.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Caldwell was selected by Sherrill as her running mate in July 2025 and was appointed secretary of state in December after their election victory. Prior to his election, Caldwell served as president of Centenary University and is a pastor at the Covenant United Methodist Church in Plainfield, New Jersey.</p>
