<p>French Champagne production is projected to decline by nearly 50% in 2026 due to a heat wave that affected crop yields across the country. The Champagne region was particularly impacted by a combination of weather factors, including drought, hail, and frost, leading to a 48% decrease in output compared to the 2025 average, according to the French agriculture ministry.</p>
<p>Other wine varieties were also affected, with pinot noir from the Bourgogne-Beaujolais region experiencing a 33% reduction in output. Overall, wine production in France fell by 6%, totaling 34 million hectoliters, which is 17% below the five-year average.</p>
<p>The agriculture ministry indicated that the decline in production was partly due to extreme summer heat waves and worsening drought conditions, which caused issues such as sunburn, berry shriveling, and foliage shedding. The high temperatures also resulted in an early harvest.</p>
<p>However, not all regions experienced a decrease; late August rains alleviated some drought conditions, leading to a 10% increase in the Bordeaux region and a 5% increase in the Languedoc-Roussillon region.</p>
<p>Data collected through September 1 indicates that France's 2026 wine harvest will be the lowest in three decades. A significant heat wave affected much of France from June 17 to July 2, caused by an “Omega block” weather pattern that trapped hot air beneath a persistent high-pressure system. French health officials estimate that the June heat wave contributed to more than 5,700 excess deaths, a 36% increase above expected mortality.</p>
<p>In response to the extreme temperatures, the French government allocated 1 billion euros in funding to assist farmers in recovering from crop losses. Additionally, wine farmers have faced declining sales, with exports reaching a 25-year low in 2025.</p>
