NYPD recruit dies after collapsing at police academy workout

An NYPD recruit died on Monday after collapsing while working out at the Police Academy in Queens, according to police sources. The recruit, identified as Probationary Police Officer Kamir Loubarria, was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. after being transported to Booth Memorial Hospital. The NYPD confirmed Loubarria's passing on social media, stating, "Kamir was committed to a life of service and helping to keep New York City safe. The entire NYPD mourns this devastating loss." Sources indicated that Loubarria was breathing and awake for a period after CPR was administered. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch visited the hospital following the recruit's condition deterioration. Loubarria had joined the police department in April. Police Benevolent Association union President Patrick Hendry expressed condolences, stating, "Our hearts are heavy following the death of our brother police officer who collapsed during training at the Police Academy today." He noted that Loubarria was already considered a hero for his commitment to protecting New Yorkers and emphasized the union's support for Loubarria's family during this time.
