Alabama school bus driver charged in crash reportedly experienced medical crisis

<p>An Alabama woman, Theresa McCloud, 75, is facing charges of vehicular homicide and criminal negligence following a crash on November 18, 2025, in Auburn. McCloud was driving a bus for Auburn City Schools when she struck a vehicle, resulting in the death of 42-year-old Jennifer Leigh Cooper, a local bakery owner, according to reports from AL.com.</p><p>Supporters of McCloud claim that she experienced a medical crisis during the incident. However, a lawsuit filed by Cooper's husband against McCloud and the Auburn City Schools Board of Education alleges that McCloud had diabetes and had been prescribed opiates prior to the accident.</p><p>On the day of the crash, McCloud reportedly informed her supervisors that she was not feeling well. Two days before the accident, she had visited a doctor who prescribed her opiates, which came with a warning against driving while taking them.</p><p>A GoFundMe page, which has since been removed, stated that McCloud's blood sugar dropped to 23 mg/dL while driving, leading to confusion and loss of consciousness. The page claimed that McCloud had never experienced a low blood sugar episode before and that doctors confirmed it was a medical crisis.</p><p>The lawsuit alleges that McCloud lost control of the bus due to her medical conditions and the use of opiates. It states that these factors severely impaired her ability to drive and perform her duties as a bus driver. McCloud's family disputes these allegations. McCloud turned herself in on September 4, 2026, to begin the legal process.</p><p>Fox News Digital has reached out to the school district for comment.</p>
