Its purpose, according to Palace sources, is to clarify that any public activity by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex going forward is to be understood as undertaken in a private capacity rather than on behalf of the monarchy.</p><p>According to Newsweek, which obtained the letter's text, it states that the couple's position "is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests," and confirms that their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain unused. The letter also reportedly reiterates that the arrangement established when the couple stepped back from royal duties in January 2020—sometimes referred to as the Sandringham Agreement—remains fully in effect, barring any "half-in, half-out" role that would allow them to draw on royal status while pursuing outside commercial ventures.</p><p>Harry and Meghan relocated to Britain in late August with their children, Archie and Lilibet, after six years living in Montecito, California. The family is reportedly settling into a privately owned home outside London while maintaining their California residence and a property in Portugal.
