Nicaragua Accuses Germany of Genocide Convention Violations at ICJ

Nicaragua has accused Germany of violating the Genocide Convention by supporting Israel amid ongoing conflict in Gaza. The case was filed in 2024 and alleges that Germany breached international humanitarian law by supplying military equipment to Israel, which Nicaragua claims facilitates genocide. Germany, which is Israel's largest arms supplier after the United States, denies these accusations and is challenging the admissibility of Nicaragua's claims and the court's jurisdiction. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague is set to determine whether the case can proceed to a full examination of the allegations. Nicaragua's ambassador to the Netherlands, Carlos Jose Arguello Gomez, stated that Germany failed to distinguish between self-defense and genocide. The ICJ previously rejected Nicaragua's request for emergency orders to halt military assistance to Israel but did not dismiss the broader case. Germany's legal adviser, Julia Monar, argued that Nicaragua did not follow the necessary steps to bring the case and that many claims are beyond the court's jurisdiction. The ICJ is currently holding hearings, which will take several months to reach a preliminary ruling. Meanwhile, violence in Gaza continues, with significant casualties reported since the ceasefire began in October 2024. The UN Satellite Centre has reported extensive damage to infrastructure in Gaza, with many people still missing. The timeline for a final judgment in Nicaragua's case remains uncertain, potentially extending for years.
