Rescue Efforts Continue Following Building Collapse in New Delhi

Rescue efforts are ongoing in New Delhi's Satya Niketan area following the collapse of a five-story building on September 6, 2026. The structure, which was nearly 50 years old, has resulted in a death toll of seven, with emergency personnel recovering another body from the rubble on September 7. At least 12 individuals have been rescued, and authorities indicate that more people may still be trapped. The building was reportedly housing a private hostel and is located near Delhi University's South Campus, a popular area for students. Local media sources indicate that the building's collapse may have been caused by water accumulation in the basement due to ongoing repair work, according to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has reported that its trauma center received 10 patients from the incident, with five declared dead upon arrival and one later succumbing to injuries. Delhi Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the building owners, citing culpable homicide and negligence in construction or repair under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, India's official criminal code.
