Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Congratulates OpenAI on Astra Release and Discusses AGI

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang congratulated OpenAI on the release of its latest AI model, Astra, during a post on X on September 7, 2026. Huang stated, "AGI has arrived," referring to artificial general intelligence, a term used to describe AI systems that can perform tasks at or above human levels of intelligence. He noted that Astra was trained using Nvidia's chips. In his post, Huang highlighted the rapid development of AI, stating, "From ChatGPT to o1 to Astra in 4 years." OpenAI introduced Astra as the world's "most intelligent and aligned model," capable of executing demanding professional tasks with high speed and accuracy. OpenAI President Greg Brockman remarked during a call with reporters that this marks the beginning of the AGI era. AGI is defined by OpenAI as highly autonomous systems that outperform humans in economically valuable work. Astra is being rolled out to customers this week. Brockman expressed confidence that future evaluations will recognize this model as a significant milestone in AGI development. However, AI researcher Gary Marcus criticized Huang's assertion, stating that it lacked evidence and clear definitions. He provided his own criteria for AGI, arguing that Astra does not meet most of them. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously described AGI as a poorly defined term. Nvidia's chips have become essential for leading AI companies, with OpenAI acknowledging Nvidia as foundational to its infrastructure. Nvidia reported $96.2 billion in quarterly revenue in August, driven by demand for its AI chips, which generated $89 billion. Huang also mentioned that 400,000 GPUs will be coming online soon.
