U.S. Government Limits Travel to Nogales, Sonora Due to Security Concerns

<p>Travel restrictions have been implemented for U.S. government employees in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, according to officials. The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico issued a warning on Saturday, restricting government activities due to an unspecified threat in the area.</p><p>"Due to threat information, U.S. government activities in, and travel to, Nogales have been restricted to essential movement during daylight hours only," stated the U.S. Consulate General in Nogales.</p><p>Sonora's State Security Board reported that it contacted U.S. consular officials following the alert but did not provide details about a specific threat. State authorities indicated that they had no information establishing a concrete risk to the public but would continue preventive security operations in Nogales.</p><p>The alert also noted that the U.S. Travel Advisory designates Sonora as a Level 3 "Reconsider Travel" area. Individuals in the region are advised to exercise increased caution, be aware of their surroundings, seek shelter in the event of an incident, notify friends and family of their safety, follow instructions from Mexican law enforcement, and monitor local media for updates.</p><p>U.S. lawmakers have also urged individuals in the area to heed the warnings issued by the U.S. government. Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., stated on X, "For Americans in or near Nogales - or who may have family members or friends there: please heed the guidance and warnings from the U.S. government." He added, "We are praying for the safety of U.S. citizens and personnel who may be in harm's way." The specific threat that triggered the security warning in Nogales remains unclear.</p>
