Armed Assailant Injures Several at Ohio Campaign Event for Democratic Candidate Amy Acton

An armed assailant attacked Democratic candidate for Ohio governor, Amy Acton, during a campaign stop at the Canfield Fair on Sunday, injuring several individuals, according to campaign officials. The assailant, identified as Patrick Havas, 38, lunged at Acton while she was speaking but she was unharmed, as stated by campaign spokesperson Addie Bullock. Havas was arrested with multiple weapons, including two pistols and a Taser, after knocking volunteers to the ground, as reported by Chris Anderson, chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party. The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed the arrest and noted that police recovered two handguns and brass knuckles from the scene. Havas faces charges of disorderly conduct and two counts of assault, with further details pending investigation. Sheriff Jerry Greene reported that two older adults were knocked down during the incident. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine condemned the attack, stating that police responded quickly to the situation at the Mahoning County Democratic booth. Acton’s Republican opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy, described the attack as “completely unacceptable.” Ramaswamy has raised significant funds and spent on advertisements criticizing Acton. The 2023–2024 campaign cycle has seen federal political committees spend over $40 million on security, according to the nonpartisan group Public Service Alliance. The Ohio gubernatorial race is closely watched in the upcoming midterm elections, with the election date set for November 3.
