North Korea Commissions Warship as Part of Nuclear Response System

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended the commissioning of a warship, the Kang Kon, which he stated could deliver "annihilating retaliatory strikes on an enemy," citing "constant threats," according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The ceremony took place at Wonsan Port in Kangwon Province on September 6, 2026. Kim emphasized that the warship represents North Korea's self-respect and determination to defend its rights and interests. He stated, "The time has come for us to exercise our sovereignty at sea and under water," and mentioned that "dangerous shadows must be erased" due to perceived threats in the waters east of the Korean Peninsula. KCNA did not specify the weapons systems on the Kang Kon but noted that it shares systems with the Choe Hyon, a 5,000-tonne warship launched in June. Previous reports indicated that Choe Hyon-class destroyers could carry missiles capable of nuclear payloads. The Kang Kon has undergone multiple launches, including a partial capsizing during its first commissioning in May 2025, followed by repairs and further trials. Kim indicated plans for another stage of naval buildup in eight months, without providing specific details. North Korea is modernizing its navy as part of a broader expansion of its nuclear-capable forces, with ongoing construction of naval bases on the east coast and plans for new naval units and warship classes. Pyongyang describes its military buildup as a deterrent against the United States and South Korea, amid ongoing tensions on the Korean Peninsula, which remains technically at war.
